freedom

“Freedom is the only worth goal in life. It is won by disregarding things that lie beyond our control.”
- Epictetus

Over the last couple of years I’ve learned how important my freedom is–it’s been an essential consideration in some major decisions I’ve made and it will always be.

For me, freedom is the ability to do things the way I feel is best; the ability to experiment and explore different versions of my Self; the ability to structure my life so I can be present with my family and still run a good business; the ability to be the most authentic version of my Self at all times; the ability to not worry about outcomes and focus on the process; and the ability to maintain creative freedom.

It might sound like I’m a spoiled brat in that I basically want to have my cake and eat it too.

I know that I can’t always have things my way, but I’ve learned that it is possible to have it more often than we are told we can–you just need to be very clear on what you want and what is most important—my recommendation is to allow your authentic life to act as your guide–and know that there will always be tradeoffs.

I’m not sure if, in reflecting on the importance of my freedom, I really thought about Epictetus’s guide to freedom—letting go of the things out of our control.

I think his guide/definition of freedom might be the most freeing of all.

How many events, people, concerns, and fears rob you of the freedom to live a happy life?

The beauty in Epictetus’s definition of freedom is that it is not dependent on anyone else—all of my components of freedom involve other people. But, with Epcitetus, we can give our Self the gift of freedom.

My definition of freedom has evolved and includes an awareness of something I’ve always tried to do—worry about what I can control and let go of what I cannot.

What is holding you back from being more free?

How can you let it go?

“The more I practice, the luckier I get.” - Gary Player Whether it’s practice or doing the things aligned with your authentic life, “luck” will find its way to you. And when it does, you will know it is anything but luck because you understand all of the hard work, belief, visualization, and focus are what created this “luck”--it’s only luck to those on the outside. When you are aligned, connected with your Self, and moving in the direction of your authentic life doors magically open,...
