words matter

The words you choose matter more than you think.

In last night’s Mindful Monday talk, I told a group of 20 teenage boys that the words they choose will impact their mindset.

I specifically highlighted the word “can’t”.

I hate the word can’t and have tried to abolish it from our family’s vocabulary. Saying you can’t do something is a guarantee that you won’t do something.

Instead of saying "can’t," I encouraged the boys to think about saying that they haven’t discovered how to do it YET—with "yet” being an important word.

If you choose low-energy words or negative words, it is another way to label them; you will most certainly experience low-energy outcomes in life.

Choosing higher-energy or positive words does not guarantee everything will go the way you want, but it puts you in a much better position to achieve your goals and experience high-energy outcomes.

Everything can be stated in either a low-energy or high-energy way.

And you get to choose the words you use.

Choose wisely, because your words matter greatly.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing, JC

Last night I went to the opening night of J.Cole’s Fall Off Tour by my Self. The stars aligned and I just happened to be in Charlotte for an AAU tournament with Roman, J. Cole has the first two nights of his tour in Charlotte, and an Instagram post yesterday morning made me aware of the concert. I asked Roman if he wanted to go with me since his only game today wasn’t until later in the afternoon, so a late night wouldn’t affect his play. He said no. I immediately thought that I would go by...

Yesterday I had the privilege of connecting with another member of the Leading Edge, and it was perfect timing, as it often is these days. We had a great conversation, and she introduced a word to me that I absolutely loved when she said it. Well, it wasn’t actually a new word—I’ve heard it and used it countless times in my life, but I hadn’t thought about it in the context of the Authentic Life. “Mattering” “What makes us matter?” This is just another way to ask, “What is my purpose?” The...
