what got you here...

… won’t get you there.

This is one of my favorite phrases right now, especially when talking to my oldest, Roman, about his goals.

I’m trying to get him to realize that while he has achieved a lot in his almost 16 years on this earth, he has some very ambitious goals that he has not currently met, and he shouldn’t have, honestly.

The goal I recite “what got you here won’t get you there” about the most is his goal of playing college basketball.

Going into his sophomore year, he’s done a great job of positioning himself for the winter and for his junior and senior years at one of the best programs in the state. He’s an undersized guard with the skill to be an important part of his class, which is very strong.

But he also has a lot of work still ahead of him.

I know he’d love to be getting varsity minutes as a sophomore, but as of right now, he's on the bubble of getting to dress varsity after playing in the JV games, and I am hoping to get him to realize if he wants a different outcome, he needs to change what he’s doing—and in this case do more, work harder, and get outside of his comfort zone.

Because if what he was doing was enough to be varsity, he’d be there. But what he has done up to this point in his basketball career, which I am very proud of and most kids would trade places with him in a heartbeat, has gotten him to where he finds his Self.

What has got him here, won’t get him to his college dreams.

And what got you where you find your Self is not going to take you where you are evolving with your Authentic Life.

It’s not always major changes or improvements that need to be made, but if you’re looking to continue growing, you'll have to adapt and evolve.

Because what got you here won’t get you there.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

I hope you had a great weekend! If you read the Daily Notes over the last couple of weeks, you know I shared that my body was telling me to rest, and I know when my body tells me that a wave of creativity, momentum, and growth is coming in all areas of my life. Well, the creativity is back full force. For example, last week, between Roman's basketball games, one of his teammates joked with me about another friend wanting to meditate with me. I know Roman and Leo's friends are paying attention...
