momentum into the New Year

"Motivation often comes after starting, not before. Action produces momentum."
-James Clear

Over the next week, you’ll start hearing more about people’s New Year’s resolutions, and we all know that only a small percentage will make it past the middle of February. One reason most resolutions fail is the lack of momentum at the start of the year.

I don’t think you need to or should wait until January 1 to start doing something different that is going to help you move closer to your goals. But, if you do decide to make January you starting point, start building up some momentum now.

If you’re lucky enough to have a slower few weeks to end the year, use that extra time or less busy schedule to start doing little things that can build up momentum going into January.

For example, if you’re going to focus on spending more aligned with your Authentic Life, sign up for software like Monarch Money now to start categorizing your spending so you don’t have to try to do that when life gets going again in the New Year.

Or, if you’re going to lose some weight, pick one food you’ll be giving up in the New Year and stop consuming it now so you’ll have one less thing to give up, and you’ll have proof that you can in fact, make the changes you need to lose the weight you want.

And don’t wait until the end of next year to find opportunities to build momentum. Always look for opportunities to build and sustain momentum that will carry you closer to your Authentic Life.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

I hope you had a great week! A little heads up--I'm working on a short Google survey to find out what would make these Weekly Notes more valuable, or if they are what you prefer as they are. I'm contemplating going back to curating a few pieces of content each week that align with the Authentic Life, but I only want to dedicate the energy towards curation if enough people say they'd like it. This week, I dropped another episode of Convos with Friends on AlignedLife and am excited for more...

This morning, while I was making breakfast for Silas, a thought entered my mind, “I wonder if people understand WHY I write the Daily Notes, record AlignedLife, write more on the AlignedLife blog, create videos, and give talks about the Authentic Life?” I’m not sure. I then thought to my Self, “Why do I?” I asked this not because I don’t know the answer, but just as a reminder that my why is not business-related; my business is tertiary behind self-expression and helping others–it’s the...

“You don’t need more books, you need the courage to apply what you already know.” - Mohit Panchal As an avid collector of books, I know that more books won’t move the needle on my ability to keep evolving and living my Authentic Life. Don’t make the mistake of believing that a new book is going to be the final thing you need to begin making the changes you want to make or find the answers you seek–it might give you some inspiration, present some new ideas, or give you a framework to try, but...
