it's time for more structure

One of the benefits of being a business owner is flexibility. For a long time, I’ve been resistant to being overly disciplined in my day-to-day structure. I’ve always appreciated the flexibility to call an audible in the middle of the day to work from home or spend a little more time with the boys if there was nothing on my calendar. For example, instead of doing some compliance work in the middle of the day, I could head home to walk to the coffee shop with the boys. The compliance work would get done later—as my own boss, I allowed my Self the freedom to change my day up if I wanted to. But, I’m heading into what looks to be a busier season of life professionally as the interest in my work through Santiago is increasing—and this is what I want to see happen. And in this busier season, I’ve accepted that I’m going to have to trade some of my flexibility for discipline so I can make sure I’m able to do my best in all of the things I’m doing. I’ll have more to share as I build out a time-blocked calendar, themed days (investment-focused days on Tuesdays or Compliance on Thursdays, for example), and arrange accountability to make sure I actually stick to the time blocking. It’s one thing to block out a calendar, but it’s another to actually follow it. I won’t be giving up all of my flexibility, but I’m now willing to trade some of it to create more structure and discipline to accomplish everything I have in store for the Authentic Life. Putting our Selves in a position of independence should be a goal for everyone, and by independence I am thinking professionally first, but ultimately any situation you find your Self dependent on others. It doesn’t mean that you have to leap into independence, but making sure that you can escape to independence if you ever need to is becoming a must. I’ve been thinking a lot about the ESPN firing of Ryan Clark and other longtime employees and how it was done in such a heartless way, at least...
