One of my favorite J. Cole songs right now is 99 Build Freestyle off his Birthday Blizzard mixtape that he released leading up to the release of his album The Fall Off. For those who grew up on 90’s hip hop, the song is over the iconic Lox Money, Power, & Respect beat—it’s high energy and gets me hyped for the day, which is why it’s one of the first songs I listen to in my car. The title of the song, 99 Build, refers to the perfect build of a player in video games, specifically the NBA 2K series of games. As I was listening to the song this evening while working out, I had the thought that we can all be a 99 Build in some aspect of life. And we should strive to find that version of our Self. In some of my talks, I referenced being the Kobe Bryant of whatever it is we do. Kobe definitely was one of the few real-life 99 Build. You may not know it—or maybe you do—but there is a 99 Build you out there. It’s your Authentic Self. See you tomorrow and keep pursuing, JC |
I'm on a mission to help more people find and live their authentic life. Check out my Daily Notes where I write a short note each day about the connection of spirit, mind, body and money on the Pursuit of your authentic life.
“Authentic happiness derives from raising the bar for yourself, not rating yourself against others.” -Martin Seligman It’s always YOU. It’s always you who determines what success looks like. It’s always you who knows what your life is supposed to be. The only person you need to “compete” with is your Self. See you tomorrow and keep pursuing, JC
I hope you had a great weekend! I recorded a great episode of the AlignedLife podcast this week with George Kinder; you might recognize his name from my talks about life planning and the Registered Life Planner designation I hold. George created it. I'm really excited to get this episode back because we talked very little about life planning. Naturally, the topic came up throughout our conversation, but we focused on bigger, more important topics. I'm hopeful I can drop the episode this...
I’m sitting in the parking lot before Leo’s soccer match (he has to be there an hour early) watching the latest Chris Brickley vlog (for more on who Chris Brickley is, check out this Film Room report I did on him for my 12:24 newsletter) and it’s called “The People Who Matter.” The video starts off with an important NBA player in his career and then moves to his father (with mentions of his sisters), and then reflects on the time he had with his mother before she passed away—a really...
