the people who matter

I’m sitting in the parking lot before Leo’s soccer match (he has to be there an hour early) watching the latest Chris Brickley vlog (for more on who Chris Brickley is, check out this Film Room report I did on him for my 12:24 newsletter) and it’s called “The People Who Matter.”

The video starts off with an important NBA player in his career and then moves to his father (with mentions of his sisters), and then reflects on the time he had with his mother before she passed away—a really emotional story.

It made me reflect on how important the people we surround our Selves with are, and I think relationships are becoming more and more important in today’s world.

One thing I’m trying to figure out is how many people we should have in our circle. I’m aware of Dunbar’s number, which says we can only have 150 relationships at a time—beyond that, we lose the ability to maintain stable relationships. At first, 150 sounds like a lot, but I get there quick…

Family
Clients
Close friends
Communities I’m in
Acquaintances and friends from my profession
Local community

I personally find it hard not to allow people into my larger circle, and I worry that at times I don’t allocate attention to everyone, which leaves me concerned that I’m upsetting people.

I’m not sure how I navigate continuing to have great people enter my life, while maintaining a manageable number of relationships.

If you figure out how to do it, hit reply and let me know!

Take inventory of the people in your life and know who really matters.

This morning I had a great conversation with my brother Sam and I told him I thought it was going to lead to today’s Note. I decided to keep the Note my stream of thoughts and not clean it up to flow a little more naturally. Greatness is defined by what you can control—what you can do, how you can serve. Once you deliver greatness, the outcomes are out of your control because they have been handed to someone else. Most times, your greatness will carry to the individuals who have received it,...
