take advice with a grain of salt

It’s that time of year when self-help podcasts, articles, and videos proliferate as people plan to make improvements in the new year.

As you begin to consume this well-intentioned content (well, most of it is well-intentioned) remember that the expert or guru sharing information is doing so from the perspective of their lived experience–my Self included. Many experts speak as if their way is the only way—that they have access to knowledge that applies to everyone; the truth is, they don’t.

I try to make it clear that while I’m convicted in what I believe because my beliefs are rooted in the experience of both my Self and others I know or have observed, what has worked for me will not work for everyone. I offer my beliefs as a suggestion of what might work for you and as a starting point to discover what is authentic to you. I also try to be transparent that I’m still learning and growing, so what has worked for me in the past may not work for me in the future–it’s all a part of the beauty of evolving with my Authentic Life.

I share this to remind you to take any advice from the “experts” with a grain of salt because what worked for one expert may or may not work for you. You might find that a combination of expert advice blended with some of your own wisdom is what is “right” for you. So listen to the podcasts, read the blogs, and watch the videos–consume the content with curiosity and the openness to experiment to find what is authentic to you.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

Happy New Year! I apologize for just now getting this weekend's Weekly Note out to you. The boys went back to school on Monday, and I decided to squeeze as much time as possible with them on Sunday when I usually put together the email. I'll be back on the regular schedule this week! I don't know about you, but I'm coming into this new year feeling more aligned and confident than ever, and I feel that this energy is contagious, so that anyone riding alongside me is going to be a beneficiary...

“Be delusional. Believe that you have the ability to make it work no matter what. Believe that regardless of what happens, it’ll all work out in the end because that’s what it takes. Anything and everything else leads to self-sabotage and failure. If you don’t believe you have what it takes, then your subconscious will do everything it can to prove that you’re right. You don’t need to be special or talented; you don’t need all the support in the world. All you need is to believe with every...

Yesterday, I finished up a post on my AlignedLife blog to bring my December trip to Baltimore to a close–it closed the loop on a great trip and even greater conversation. The post highlighted a few post-chat things I wish I had said or expanded upon in the moment. One of these I continue to think about, “the current system isn’t fair and hasn’t been fair.” I often worry that the privileges, both real and assumed, I have been afforded in my life run counter to my belief that everyone has the...
