Last night, my friends and I hiked to the top of Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, for the sunset.

The sunset wasn’t the only gift that we would receive at the top of the mountain.

When we reached the summit, we were greeted by two young Black men sitting on the rocks like they were sent there to see us. They sat on rocks with their backs to the main view, facing the exact point we would come up. Immediately, they said hello and dapped up my two friends—acknowledging that it was nice to see them up there too.

We got to talking with them, asking them where they were from, what led them to Sedona, and some other small talk. It was eventually revealed that they both played basketball, and one of them plays at a university where I know the head coach. At first, I don’t think he believed me. We took a selfie; he texted it to his coach, and within ten minutes I was FaceTiming with the coach.

Once we made a personal connection, the conversation opened up.

We talked a little about finance (my friends and I are all advisors, and one of them works exclusively with athletes), what they were majoring in, playing basketball overseas, spirituality, and building clothing brands. I was so impressed by the perspective they had and how mature they were in how they were approaching life—I don’t think very many twenty-year-olds operate on the frequency they are on.

It was inspiring, refreshing, and encouraging; I hope they felt the same.

As if that conversation wasn’t enough, we also got to see this:

I’m not sure why we met the two young men, but it was definitely not a coincidence that we all ended up at the top of Cathedral Rock last night.

Maybe it was just a wink from the Divine.
Maybe more comes from the interaction later on.
Maybe I’m making more out of it than it really is—I don’t think so.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been greeted by a special experience at the top of a mountain in Sedona. Last year we were greeted by a hummingbird at the top of Snoopy Rock, and while that may not sound that special, the hummingbird’s flight pattern was not normal. It stayed with us for an extended period of time—hummingbirds usually fly away quickly—and flew close to us, almost as if it was making sure we saw it and knew it was there for us.

I’ve learned that you might climb to the top of a mountain just expecting to get a great view, but you may be granted an experience orchestrated by a Higher Power for a reason to be realized at a later time.

I love when synchronicities like this happen.
