nature knows

I remember towards the end of summer, my wife telling me that she was told that this fall we would not experience the normal beautiful colors of fall–that because of the summer heat and how far into summer it went, the leaves would not go through their normal color change.

It’s no secret I love California weather, but I will say that there are a few weeks during the fall when the weather in Indiana is amazing and the scenery is stunning. Leaves change from green to yellows, oranges, and reds before dropping to the ground. I wouldn’t stay in Indiana only for the fall weather and beauty, but when I eventually move west (still many years away) I will certainly miss the fall and may plan trips back to Indiana to see clients in person during the leave-changing season.

Back to the prediction of an absence of fall colors.

My initial reaction was doubt. I didn’t think that the prediction would be correct, despite the “facts” given about the temperature, the amount of time it takes for the leaves to change colors, and other scientific facts. It all made sense and seemed possible, but history has shown me that no matter what summers are like—hot, cool, long, short, wet, or dry–the leaves always go through their transformation and take us into the winter months with the same beauty—year after year.

This weekend, as I was driving to one of Leo’s soccer games (2-0 on the weekend with 11 goals as a team!!) I noticed the yellows, reds, and oranges decorating our drive to the fields. This morning, the same thing on my way to meet a friend for coffee.

Somehow, despite reasonable logic, the leaves weren’t fooled and are going through their annual beautiful transformation. Nature continues to get things right, despite ever-changing conditions. And I don’t think the trees were complaining during the summer about the heat and dry weather, and worrying about what their fall would look like.

They kept being trees.

Adjusted to the climate.

And when the time came, they went through their change.

Humans, on the other hand, would have certainly messed it all up.

We would have begun making changes this summer to time our change correctly.

We would have started coloring our leaves to match the fall colors to make sure we didn’t miss them.

We would have caused our leaves to fall off early because of stress.

Humans would have certainly missed the beauty of fall rather than just trusting that we would evolve and change as we were supposed to if we just listened to nature’s call.

As you enjoy the colors this fall, if you are fortunate enough to live in an area that gets to see the changing of nature’s colors, remember that you are a part of nature, and trust that you might just know exactly when you need to make changes, evolve, and can find your guide within your Self, just as the trees do.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

Eventually, most of us arrive at a similar, if not the same, understanding of life. The best summary of this “understanding” can be found in Bronnie Ware’s Regrets of The Dying: I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. I wish I had let myself be happier. When you begin to understand these regrets and understand what...
