letting go to become

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”
-Not Lao Tzu

This quote is often misattributed to Lao Tzu; no translation of the Tao Te Ching includes it. The best I could find is the author of The Tao of Leadership added it in his translation of the original text.

Regardless of whether Lao Tzu wrote this or would have even written it—I’ve found some opinions that the idea isn’t one that he would support—I think there is some good in it.

We often hold on to an identity given or assigned to us by others–there’s comfort in being that version of our Self, even if it’s not one we want to be.

Or, we hold on to a false identity we’ve given to our Self—there’s a difference between embodying the version of our Self we desire to be and holding on to an identity we know is not authentic.

Sometimes, to become the version of your Self you were meant to be, you have to surrender and let go of the version that no longer aligns with your authentic Self.

This isn’t easy.

But, sometimes it’s necessary.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

I was reminded of a conversation I had a couple of weeks ago, which centered around the question, “Who are you?” Not, what do you do? Not, what do you like? Not, who were you? But who are YOU? For most of us, the answer requires more time and reflection than we usually give it. Whatever answer you just thought of is probably only partially correct. Too often, we define who we are by the influences of others, what we think others want us to be, and keep who we are to our Selves. We can work on...

For the readers here in the States, I hope you find time to rest, relax, and recharge on this Memorial Day. I hope you get to rest, relax, and recharge for your Self–take advantage of the day that most of us get off from our professional responsibilities and slow down a bit, spend time with loved ones, and appreciate all of the good in your life. While you are resting, relaxing, and recharging, be sure to find a moment to sit in gratitude for all of those in the service, past and present, who...

I hope you had a great week and are having an even better holiday weekend! I came across a cool new project by Rick Rubin that I had to share first. In The Way of Code, Rick takes on Lao Tzu, who has been quoted many times in The Daily Notes, and does so in a very cool and creative way. This "book" is online, and while I usually like physical books, the interactive visuals make this online book a unique experience in addition to a good read. A Substack called AlignedLife I recently launched a...
