getting right within

“How you gonna win when you ain’t right within?”

-Lauryn Hill

It’s fitting that this quote popped into my sphere of consciousness today. After a couple of client meetings and some planning, I spent most of the afternoon finishing the first issue of a new project called 12:24; this creative work has led me to change the format of The Weekly Notes.

Long story short, and to keep this from being too promotional of the new newsletter, 12:24 is where I’ll be writing to help athletes improve their performance both on and off the court by encouraging them to go within. As Ms. Hill reminds us, they won’t be able to win if they ain’t right within—that goes for on the court and in life.

While the newsletter is for athletes, it’s really for the human in the athlete, and I think it will be appreciated by more than just athletes. Issues will go out twice a month, on the 12th and the 24th at 12:24 EST, and will be a long-form essay. I’ve never written like this before, and I’m excited for the challenge—I already have the first six planned, so I don’t think it will be too much of a challenge.

Not only is the song that this quote comes from a classic, but the quote also sums up what so much of my work is about.

Helping people get right within by just helping them figure out who they really are.

I started tomorrow’s issue 000 of 12:24 with a quote that is just an older version of Ms. Hill’s

“As within, so without.”

How are you within?

A minor change to The Weekly Note starts this week. I started the Weekly Note to deliver the week's Daily Notes to those who want them but don't want a daily email. We get too many emails as it is, so I was happy to send them all in one. Not wanting to make the Weekly Note just about me, I decided to curate some additional content to make the email more valuable, and that is where the change is coming. For the foreseeable future, the Weekly Note will return to its original purpose —...

This morning I walked to our local coffee shop to work from there for a couple of hours—it takes about thirty minutes to get there. On the way home, I decided not to finish the podcast I'd been listening to on the way there. Instead, I walked home with just my thoughts and stayed present with the nature around me. Sure, I could have kept listening to the podcast to be “productive” and make the most of my time, but I felt it was a better use of thirty minutes to just be. When I first started...
