“Above all, keep a close watch on this— that you are never so tied to your former acquaintances and friends that you are pulled down to their level. If you don’t, you’ll be ruined. . . . You must choose whether to be loved by these friends and remain the same person, or to become a better person at the cost of those friends . . . if you try to have it both ways you will neither make progress nor keep what you once had.”

Lately, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on how lucky I am to have the friends I surround my Self with. Whether it's group text messages, attending a concert a few weeks ago, or recording episodes of Convos with Friends on the AlignedLife Podcast, I understand how fortunate I am to have people in my life who are ambitious, positive, optimistic, operating from a similar frequency, authentic, and loving. I’ve written in the past about the importance of making sure the people you surround your Self with are aligned with where you are heading and how painful it can be to let go of relationships that no longer are. The last line of Epictetus’s quote is what hit the hardest for me…trying to keep people from the past around while bringing new people who are aligned into your life will not help you move closer to the authentic life you are pursuing. You must limit the people who will pull you down and surround your Self with those who will push you up. See you tomorrow and keep pursuing, JC |
I'm on a mission to help more people find and live their authentic life. Check out my Daily Notes where I write a short note each day about the connection of spirit, mind, body and money on the Pursuit of your authentic life.
"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.” -Horace Mann When I first heard this quote, I thought it was a little harsh– “be ashamed.” But, the more I sat with it, I saw how Horace Mann, back in the 1800s, was encouraging people to pursue their authentic lives, as one of the best ways to achieve victory for humanity is to live the life you were created to live. When you live your authentic life, you will undoubtedly impact the lives of others and find your victory for...
Did you miss me? Did you even notice my absence the last few days? If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, the last Daily Note was written on 10.8.25, which means there are five missed Daily Notes. Thankfully, the missed Notes were by choice and not an emergency that kept me from writing. Last Thursday, Ang and I took off to spend a few days in Sedona, Arizona, for a belated anniversary celebration. I decided after writing the Note for the 8th that I wouldn't write any Notes while we were...
I don't usually share posts from my AlignedLife Substack, where I write in greater detail about money, but I wanted to share this one in today's Note because I wanted to share my idea, which I've written and talked about before, and share the podcast episode that sparked the post. Here's the post originally shared on AlignedLife over on Substack: On a recent interview on The Diary of A CEO podcast, Morgan Housel shared with host Steven Bartlett that there are two ways to solve the problem of...
